  • Give a black bin bag to everyone when they arrive and register. Make it easy for them and most jugglers will help you keep the place clean.
  • If you put bins/bin bags around site and in the bar, AND EMPTY THEM REGULARLY, people will put nearly all the rubbish in there themselves. If you don't, they will throw it all on the floor and you will have to pick it up. If you put a sign up telling people what to do when bin is full someone might pay attention.
  • Have a lucky-dip volunteer bag for when people register - they pick out a job and book a time slot to do it.
  • Reward volunteers with e.g. badges or refreshments.
  • Thank the volunteers publicly and effusively at some point during the convention.
  • Eating and sleeping is really important as the event is long with very long hours; BJC2k had one person whose job was to feed the rest of us and it worked brilliantly.
  • Divide the tasks into essential, desirable and fluff. Whilst the fluff is the most fun be wary of investing too much time in it (eg countdown clock at BJC2k).
  • Go to a carpet outlet and buy as long a length of end of line carpet they'll give you for £5-10. Put the carpet at the campsite entrance to your venue; let the carpet get horribly muddy instead of the venue.
  • Skate/Snake boards can/will ruin wooden floors - this will cost you big time - be aware of your venue.
  • Consider a policed 'no shoes' policy for the Gym
  • Free shower gel costs very little and is a nice touch
  • As well as thinking about your campsite it is worth making a list of nearby hotels and B&Bs. Your public show performers will require accommodation for at least one night of their booking and many will expect one for the whole event. You can also somtimes block book an entire hotel at a discount and sell on the rooms to BJC attendees who want one.
